Member retention is a really important part of keeping your club or coaching business healthy. It is far easier and less costly to keep a member than to go out and advertise and bring new members into your club. Did you know it costs 7 times more to acquire a new customer than retain an existing one ( Bain & Company)?

Read on for our top ten tips on how to keep members:

1. Engage

Building strong relationships with your members is key to retention. Remember, a happy member is a loyal one and is less inclined to consider moving to another club or coach. By creating a relationship between members and club and coaching team will make a huge difference to loyalty.

How do I engage with club members?

Great ways to communicate with your members include:

  • Your ActivityPro app has the ability to communicate forthcoming news and events, so make sure you keep it updated!
  • Social media is a great way to share useful tips, club updates and handy information. Social media allows you to keep a constant presence without being intrusive.
  • Emails are also great ways to share important information and details of any events that may be taking place.

Taking the time to communicate with your members through multiple channels will enforce how important their welfare and participation is to the club.

Let’s not forget face to face communication! You and any representatives of the club (coaches, staff, committee members included!) should be friendly, approachable and personable. Greeting a member on-court, asking about progress and getting to know them and their goals are perfect ways to build rapport and will help members feel welcome and valued at the club.

2. Position yourself as a knowledgebase

Ensure that you are up to date with industry news are be able to offer informed advice relating to goals. By being experts you will add weight and value to your facilities, allowing your members to use you as an all in one resource rather than purely a facility provider. Once again achieving this will greatly add to the member experience.

3. Encourage member involvement

Run fun events and social activities, keeping members involved with your club is a great way to add value alongside your facilities.

4. Ask for feedback!

Ask your members what they are pleased with and what you are doing well, this way you’ll be able to identify what makes them happy and act upon it.

For example You get great feedback on your Saturday morning tennis fitness class. You could introduce more classes like this or rework your less popular morning classes to feature more fitness.

Not all feedback will be positive. Areas that members are not happy with may often be things that can be changed with relative ease. By taking action on negative feedback you will show your members that you value their opinion and their custom.

5. Create a community

Actively encourage members to interact with each other. By building a friendly community, members will feel a sense of belonging. Your club will not only serve as an exercise facility but also a pivotal part of their social life. This will not only add a sense of accountability in terms of their tennis progression, but it will also ensure they stay members at your club with their friends.

6. Make sure you are easy to contact and highly responsive

It is vital that members are able to contact you with ease, whether that be over the phone, via email or through your ActivityPro app. When members reach out to you it should be a quick and easy process.

7. Reach out to members who may be unhappy

Keep track of members who’s attendance has dropped significantly. If a members stop attending groups or you see them less at the club then it might be a good idea to reach out to them, whether that’s simply a phone call to check that they are still satisfied with their membership . Let your member know you care.

8. Go above and beyond

Fulfil your members’ needs and requirements to the best of your abilities. Reputation spreads quickly through word of mouth. Spending that extra few minutes being attentive to a member will stay with them. A glowing reference from a current member is more valuable than any campaign or marketing activity that you undertake.

1. Open Communication Channels

No matter how busy you may be, it is crucial that you keep communicating with parents by letting them know about the great things that are happening at your club.

Regularly send newsletters, update Facebook and Instagram pages with news, photos and videos all engage your club parents and help them feel involved with the club.

Did you know? Your ActivityPro app is awesome at helping you engage with parents! Not only do we have quick links to your social channels, but your news and events section can be updated to show what’s going on at your club!

2. Feedback – good AND bad

It’s always good to know what we as coaches are doing right, but equally important to know how we could do better.

Asking parents to give their feedback is important for three reasons:

  • You get to learn what they like/don’t like and can change accordingly.
  • Asking for feedback keeps them involved and engaged with your coaching and the club. Thinking about adding court booking to your ActivityPro app? Ask members if this will enhance their membership before you decide.
  • You keep improving. If you are continually listening and seeking feedback then you always have a pulse on what your customers want.

3. Spreading the word

Members ultimately want the club and your coaching business to do well. We tend to trust and value the opinions of friends and family, so not channel that feedback? Ask them to review you on Facebook, and use these reviews in your marketing literature.

Maybe consider running an incentive scheme where members get rewards for referring new members or even just allow kids to bring friends along at the end of term.

However you try to engage with parents at your club, remember to keep talking and listening!

With 2020 fast approaching, now is the ideal time to look at your marketing plan for next year. We’ve been keeping our eye on current marketing trends and have selected our top four trends and how you can apply them in your club:

1. Start creating video content – like yesterday!

The first trend you need to get on top of and that we’ve continuously seen becoming more popular in recent years is video. This doesn’t mean hiring in professionals; even mobile video can look great with a little planning and some carefully used video editing apps to create headings/titles etc.

Mobile users spend more time than ever with their smartphones. In some age groups, the amount of time spent watching videos on mobile devices has overtaken the time spent viewing videos on more traditional devices, such as desktops and televisions.

Social channels like Facebook and Instagram have already begun rewarding pages and advertisers who create videos by prioritising their content and pushing out notifications to followers when they start a live video.

Actionable Steps:

  • Start compiling video footage from around your club and saving in a cloud file management platform. These can just be short shots (20 – 60 seconds) that you can use in videos down the road.
  • Try creating a time-lapse walkthrough video of your club! With any iPhone, open up the video app and choose time-lapse. Then just walk all through your club for 2 – 3 mins total, which will output a short video!

2. Consistently Sharing High-Quality Content

Not only does content demonstrate knowledge and expertise to potential members reading your articles or pages, it’s what search engines put in their search results. If the information on your blog or your social media posts is not valuable to your followers and members, they will be less likely to continue reading your content. Similarly, if you post high-quality content, but you only do so once in a blue moon, you are not keeping your audience engaged with your brand.

Regardless of how you choose to implement your content marketing strategy, make sure that you make it a priority this coming year.

3. Personalisation

90% of 1,000 people surveyed said they find personalisation appealing and 80% said they’re more likely to do business with a company that offers personalised experiences. Customers are beginning to expect personalization and there are a lot of ways for digital marketers to deliver.

Personalisation goes a long way in helping your members trust your club, which can have countless benefits over time. Tailor your content to your audience so that they feel that the information you share with them is relevant. Send personalised emails that show the members of your email list that their membership is important to you.

With your ActivityPro personalised app, you can make sure members feel as though they are part of the club when they download your own club app.

4. Social Messaging Apps

Apps are becoming popular ways for businesses to communicate with their customers. In fact, Facebook Messenger sees over 10 billion messages exchanged between individuals and businesses each month. However your ActivityPro app has an integrating messaging and notification function so that all of your communications with members are centralised in one place. Not only that, but you can message according to group… so if it’s raining and you need to cancel the 4pm Orange Ball group, you’d simply select and message all of the parents simultaneously. Easy!
